Reclaim Your Kids From Their Screens

How too much entertainment media hurts kids and what parents can do about it

About the book . . .

Too much entertainment media is hurting our kids. It’s rewiring their brains and replacing time that should be spent on activities necessary for healthy brain development—things like reading, attending music lessons, practicing sports, engaging in imaginative play, and taking long walks through nature. With rates of adolescent anxiety and depression skyrocketing and significantly lower numbers of young men entering the workforce and attending college, let alone completing it, it’s time for society to do some soul-searching. Reclaim Your Kids challenges you to think about these issues, picture the type of person you’d like your child to become in the future, and take a closer look at your parenting decisions. Imagine your children at the age you are now. What are they like? Do they have meaningful relationships? Have they achieved work/life balance? Do they live in a close-knit community? Do they share your values? Picture a healthy, happy adult full of curiosity about the world, compassion for others, and enthusiasm for life. They are confident, secure, and ready to take on the world. Now, take an objective look at your screen decisions. Do they align with your vision of your child’s future? Or, has your child lost his or her sense of curiosity about the world and motivation to go to school? Does your child exhibit symptoms of depression and anxiety or attention issues? Does your child have age-inappropriate outbursts and temper tantrums? If you have any doubts about your screen decisions, I encourage you to trust your instincts. If your child’s behavior, loss of interest in other activities, aggression, or disrespectful attitude concerns you, Reclaim Your Kids is just the book to help.
