My sons learned to read in the UK (with my help). We started with the Oxford Reading Tree Biff, Chip, and Kipper books and the Songbirds Phonics Collection from school. We also used the Usborne My First Reading Library Series at home. After this, I moved them to the Usborne Reading Collection for Confident Readers. In the beginning, we took turns reading the pages and I filled in the difficult names to keep the story going. Eventually, my sons read each story once their confidence grew.

First of all, it is great to have a reading series at your fingertips. Sometimes you will get lucky with early readers at the library and sometimes you want. Books from school are hit-and-miss. My son never has much interest in the books that come home from school. He grudgingly reads these and then doesn’t view the reading process as fun. This is why you want to have a great reading collection at home.
The Usborne Reading Collection is composed of several exciting tales full of illustrations and broken down into simple chapters. My son is thrilled to be reading ‘chapter books’ (albeit highly simplified ones). This motivates him. These books make early readers feel confident because now they are ready for ‘chapter books’.

All the books in series 2 are a similar level so you can start with the book that appeals to your child the most. I started with Hercules because the illustrations feature interesting monsters and my son loves the idea of reading about the strongest man in the world. You can go through all the books in series 2 in any order. This way, you child can have a say in the selection each night.
The titles appeal to boys and girls
I love this series because there are several titles that appeal to boys. My eldest devoured all the books about Greek heroes. His knowledge of Greek mythology after reading these books impressed his teacher. Your son can follow the adventures of Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses, and Hercules. There are also simplified versions of Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, and Robin Hood. These condensed tales will give your child a foundation in the classics. Not only are they accessible to early readers, but the illustrations enhance the adventures as well.
The books are written to promote vocabulary development
These stories are the perfect level for emerging readers. Not only do they contain enough decodable words to keep the reading experience pleasurable, but they’re also stuffed full of interesting words. The vocabulary is rich and diverse. The language will help your child take his/her reading to the next level.
